The survey invites Disciples into a conversation about what they think the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) really is. Recently, many Disciples leaders, lay people, preachers, and pundits have defined the problems facing the denomination as a crisis of identity. At the October 2003 General Assembly, newly installed General Minister and President Chris Hobgood addressed the continuing challenge for Disciples to articulate a distinctive identity by outlining five marks of what makes us Disciples. Utilizing Hobgood’s marks, as well as other Disciples’ vision statements, DisciplesWorld hopes to stimulate the conversation on Disciples’ identity through the March survey. Later this spring, DisciplesWorld will invite a small group of Disciples from all over North America to participate in a discussion about the survey results, and to reflect on the Disciples’ identity. The results of the survey and the discussion will be reported and interpreted in the July/August 2004 issue of DisciplesWorld which coincides with the 200th anniversary of the “Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery,” a founding Disciples document and event. The survey is a partnership effort of DisciplesWorld, the Council on Christian Unity, and the Disciples of Christ Historical Society. DisciplesWorld encourages all Disciples to participate even if you don’t subscribe to the magazine. The survey is also available to complete online at www.disciplesworld.com. Don’t miss this survey. It is a chance for all Disciples to participate in a conversation about Disciples identity. DisciplesWorld is a journal of news, opinion and mission for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The magazine was started to continue the rich tradition of independent journalism in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Indianapolis, IN (March 30, 2004)? DisciplesWorld is happy to announce a new volunteer program in support of the magazine. The new initiative is called the DisciplesWorld Rep program in which individuals promote and sell subscriptions to their congregation. While this program has been in the works for some time, it really got underway at the 2003 General Assembly in Charlotte, NC where individuals began to sign up to become Reps. Today, the program has over 200 active DisciplesWorld Reps throughout the country and is growing. ?We would like to have a DisciplesWorld Rep in every congregation,? said Verity Jones, DisciplesWorld publisher and editor. ?This program allows us to extend our presence to people we may never reach with mailings or advertising. The support that these generous volunteers provide is invaluable to the magazine?s growth.? When a person becomes a DisciplesWorld Rep, the magazine provides them with a Rep Kit that contains the promotional materials they will need. In addition, the magazine offers a small incentive for the Rep?s efforts -- for every ten subscriptions a Rep sells they receive one free subscription. Anyone interested in supporting the magazine by becoming a DisciplesWorld Rep for his or her congregation is encouraged to email Mary Breidenbach, Director of Marketing at marketing@disciplesworld.com or by calling Donna at the DisciplesWorld office at 317-375-8846.
