The yearly ACP competition, which provides an opportunity to recognize professional excellence among its members, drew more than 1,000 entries in 45 categories. In the Professional Resource category, DisciplesWorld article, "I Wonder Who Wrote Today?s Sermon?" by Mary Alice Mulligan (December 2003) won an Award of Merit. The article provided advice on how pastors can help parishioners understand and participate in the sermon-preparation process. In making the award, the judge noted, "This is a fine, practical article that any preacher would appreciate." DisciplesWorld was also honored with an Award of Merit in the Humor Graphic category for the cartoon, "Gunfight at the Eye-rack Corral" by Dan Sheply. When it appeared in the DisciplesWorld March 2003 issue about the Iraq war, the cartoon drew fire from some readers. Finally, the magazine earned an Honorable Mention in the Theme Section category for its September issue on "Public Schools ? Options = Controversy". The section was edited by DisicplesWorld Managing Editor Sherri Wood Emmons and designed by Lynda A. Preston. ?We are honored and thrilled to receive these awards from the Associated Church Press. We strive to provide a magazine of the highest quality to our readers and it is gratifying to have our work recognized at this level,? said Verity Jones, DisciplesWorld publisher and editor. The Associated Church Press is a professional organization, which brings together publications that share a common commitment to excellence in journalism as a means to describe, reflect, and support the life of faith and the Christian community.
